“The “Faceless Fare-Evader”: Profiles of the Criminalized in New York City
Co-written and co-reported by Nomaris Garcia Rivera and Susie Fordi. Why do the people of New York City that evade the MTA’s subway fares on their daily routine? Through mini-profiles of people who are fare-evading the MTA, along with photos and audio, we can learn more about who the “faceless fare-evader” is and why they chose to not pay the fare even with the risks. Although fare evasion is not new in the city, the story’s timeliness is due to the increase in policing of public transit, including multiple instances of police brutality that targets youth of color.
