A Glimpse Into The Black Fashion Scene

Capstone project written, reported and designed by Nomaris Garcia Rivera
“A Glimpse Into The Black Fashion Scene” is a project that looks to document a moment in the history of Black fashion whilst asking us to rethink how we engage with fashion in contemporary America in a critical way. It is not only about the clothes, but about the bodies that make it and wear it.

This is a journalistic piece of work, however to stay neutral in the face of racism is to side with oppression. The history of fashion design, as is the history of most industries within the western world, is plagued by violence against Black people.

This piece does not look to dwell on this pain but to acknowledge injustice and what has preceded it. It is also meant to tell the stories of the invisibilized Black bodies that have built this industry and have innovated the artform that is fashion. If it seems that this piece of work is biased we must consider what it means to be unbiased. Is there such a thing as objectivity?
